Garage door remote not working? Try these first
If the button on the garage wall still opens the door but your car remote or keypad doesn't, the opener itself is usually fine. The problem is between the remote and the opener, and most of the time you can fix it yourself in a few minutes.
These checks come from Chamberlain/LiftMaster's support guide (Chamberlain). Other brands have similar features. Check your opener's manual for exact steps.
1. Is the opener in lock (vacation) mode?
Many wall controls have a lock button. When lock mode is on, Chamberlain says "the opener ignores remote control commands." It's easy to bump by accident.
- Look at the wall control. A flashing light often means lock mode is on.
- To turn it off on Chamberlain/LiftMaster controls: press and hold the Lock button until the light stops flashing or turns solid. Craftsman's guide says to hold it for about 2 seconds (Craftsman).
- Try the remote again.
2. Replace the battery
A weak battery is the most common cause. Many Chamberlain and LiftMaster remotes use a CR2032 3V coin battery. Match the + side to the marking. If the remote's light is dim or doesn't come on at all, start here.
3. Reprogram the remote
If someone pressed and held the Learn button on the opener too long, it may have erased every remote paired to it. Reprogram each one using the instructions in your opener's manual or on the manufacturer's site. Most brands have step-by-step guides by model. Car-built-in buttons (HomeLink and similar) have their own pairing steps in your car's manual.
4. Check range and interference
- Test from right under the opener. If it works up close but not from the driveway, it's a range problem.
- LED light bulbs in or near the opener can interfere with the signal, according to Chamberlain. If the problem started after new bulbs went in, try swapping them for bulbs rated for garage door openers.
- A damaged antenna wire hanging from the opener can also cut range.
5. Keypad not working?
Outside keypads usually run on batteries too. Replace them first. If the keypad still doesn't work, it may need to be reprogrammed with a new PIN. See your keypad's instructions.
When it's not the remote
Call a technician if:
- The wall button doesn't work either, or the opener hums or clicks but the door doesn't move
- The opener's lights blink a code you can't clear (see garage door won't close)
- The door moves unevenly, makes grinding noises, or stops partway
- The opener is old and you're thinking about replacing it (see opener repair)
